1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Indigenous art Symbolizing Indigenous art through the narrative fisherman activities
In the indigenous context, the artist chooses the Udang Galah and Sailfish as the subjects chosen to be used as a source of reference to something indigenous. Kuala Rompin or Rompin town is the largest town of Rompin District, southeastern Pahang, Malaysia. It is located on the South-East coast of Peninsular Malaysia and faces the South China Sea. It is about 133 km (83 mi) south from Kuantan, the State Capital of Pahang. From Singapore, travellers must travel 215 km (134 mi) north by the coastal road via the city of Johor Bahru and the town of Mersing. From the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Rompin is located east and is about 3½ hours journey by road.
It was said at one time in this area there is a tree named Ru, or Rhu (Casuarina equisetifolia). Ru trees are unique compared with other casuarina trees that live here because of its cascading shape. One story tells of rhu trees having a circumference that can fit as many as 40 people dining together. At first, people call this place name as Rhu Ramping, and eventually Rumpin and Rompin.
The purpose of this study is to explore the daily activities of fishermen which is one of the socia economy to the community in Kuala Rompin. The lobster and sailfish as a symbolic to the activities in the ocean that makes the area in the district of Kuala Rompin famous for seafood. These lobsters and sailfish have become icons in the Kuala Rompin area and are also syomblic to fishing activities in Kuala Rompin and also create an image of identity in the area and district of Kuala Rompin, Pahang. The uses "Shrimp and also sailfish" is a symbol used by the artist in making the work into a still life form. The work that the artist is trying to bring is based on experience and also observation during the artist's stay in the research area of Kuala Rompin, Pahang.
In this indigenous context, as one of the artists, it is necessary to take care of all aspects, including the originality of the heritage and also the culture that makes an area known to many. As an artist the necessary aspect is to look at the aesthetic and the artistic, the existence of these two is to maintain the originality that is the backbone to the society and also the impact on the artist in the indigenous era in which the previous civilization. The currents of modernization continue to have an impact on the change of tradition. The activities of fishing nowadays have indirectly changed the way of life of fishermen and the dependence on modernity has reduced the naturalistic of the traditional way of the past. Realizing this, as an artist it is necessary to empathize and feel life in a society that has the characteristics of originality in the context of indgenous art.
1.2 Colonialism The Influences of narrative fisherman people
In this research on the influence of naive art applied the influence of western elements into the artwork with the concept of still life. Through reference and interpretation in understanding the ideology and understanding of this naive art that is applied into the work. The use of elements and principles of art in the work helps in the production of better works and on contemporary art. This flow of art and style is used in the production of works because of the influence of folklore or cartoonists who inspired naive art paintings. This is also a factor towards western elements being applied into contemporary art. This study is also closely related to the narrative of fisherman people where the influence of naive art is more easily labeled to paintings that are processed and drawn spontaneously through observation. Therefore, this study details more about the activities of fishermen and the settlement of fishing villages, The research also to guide the production of artworks on the relevance of western elements in the processing of contemporary art movement style which is naïve art.
This study is more practical where the artist is attracted to the naive style and the approach that is highlighted that is the narrative of fisherman people where the focus is given in terms of the socio economy of the fishermen and also the settlement of fishing villages. The concept of society that describes the narrative of fisherman people is more synonymous with the community in Kuala Rompin. This study focuses more on the activities of fishermen and also the settlement of fishermen who use the approach of elements of western ideological art that is naive art. The subject chosen is also more to the society and the lives of the fishermen.
1.3 Nationalism Fisherman as sosia- economy for Malaysian identity
This study is more in the nature of recognizing nationalism of citizenship. This is because this study also collects data on the exposure of nationalism to local artists, especially in Malaysia and also its impact on the work through this nationalism to artists in embodying citizenship. In addition, this study also emphasizes the value of nationalism on the processing of ideas and the eruption of works in bringing the context of nationalism in the making of works of art. It is also related to how the approach of art in Malaysia influenced by western elements and the characteristic changes in the production of the artwork by local artists and heading towards modernity. At the same time, identity is the most important factor in symbolizing a country or nation. In this study, an identity feature that symbolizes Malaysia has also been placed. This research also covers aspects in terms of history and development of a country. Therefore, the purpose of this study is based on the Malaysian identity of fishermen who carry out socio -economic activities. In this study also involved the local traditions and culture of the Malay people. Nationalism is shown indicates the state of the local landscape and the various peoples of whom are people of Malay, Chinese, Indian and nation. In addition, this nationalism is symbolized as the social life of the economy in terms of business dealings, processed for factories, salted fish processing and so on.
The concept of socio -economy is more appropriate to describe the Malaysian identity because it is the fisherman's product and is the most important raw material. The economic activity of fishermen is also often the focus because it is the producer material (output).
In this era of globalization, the socio -economy for fishermen has contributed a lot to various types of food, especially in the processing of canned food. In this case too, the source of production from the sea is also very important, especially in various types of canned food. In the context of nationalism, identity is a factor that plays a role in recognizing a country. In the production of works, artists observe every change in the activities of these fishermen influenced by modernity. The heritage and traditions of the ancients add more artistic value to the originality of the tools than in modern times. The purpose of this research is much more to the application because of a more artistic tradition is combined with modernity and tradition that maintains Malay identity as well as social economy continued to grow rapidly.
1.4 Globalization Contemporary art in form of combination Indigenous, Colonialism and Nationalism
In this era of globalization, visual art has leaped even further towards modernity. Visual art has received various reactions especially among the society and continues to rise to a globalized and pervasive reminder. In terms of the production of works from various countries has increased its quality and as a whole has spread to the rest of the global world. Society's view of visual art is increasingly gaining attention because new forms of visual art are more attractive to some communities because it is no longer tied to conventional art. . Among the roles that are emphasized to the art flow that is globalization is the bringing of contemporary art in terms of material processing and also installation for works that are scuplutre. In the production of this contemporary work of art, the concept brought by the artist is from a combination of materials and research on the study and research on the form of the work.
In this study, the main purpose is to identify the changes in the production of making artwork. According to the current time that is in line with the modern era more open globally. In the aspect of globalization, the exposure to modern art is getting wider and needs to be intensified to make a good work. In this study, the author also wants to develop an idea that is conceptually from western influences that is based on contemporary art in a new form. In other words, the author devises several new forms resulting from a combination of indigenous art, colonialism art and nationalism art that form a work that is globalism art. This contemporary art is also influenced in various ways whether it is culture, technology, politics and globalization which brings new trends in contemporary art.
The combination of ceramic artwork and wire scuplture is one of the artist's ideas to innovate techniques and also exploit materials and tools. Calder’s wire sculptures of this period tended to be portraits, caricatures, and stylized representations of people and animals. While originally believing the medium of wire sculpture to be merely clever and amusing, as his work developed, he began to state that wire sculpture had an important place in the history of art and remarked on the great possibilities within the medium. This approach to the art of globalization is indirectly more accepted by various societies. Therefore, this contemporary art is more likely to go global.
